Cell Culture Media: This is perhaps its most ubiquitous laboratory use. Phenol Red is added to liquid growth tissue media (like DMEM or RPMI) to monitor cell health. As cells grow and metabolize, they release acidic waste products (like lactic acid), shifting the media from a healthy reddish-pink down to yellow. If the media turns yellow, it tells the researcher that the nutrients are depleted and the waste needs to be changed.
Pool and Aquarium Water Testing: It is the active reagent in household drop-test kits used to check the pH balance of swimming pools, hot tubs, and aquariums, ensuring the water stays safely in the neutral 7.2 to 7.6 range.
Medical Diagnostics (PSP Test): Historically, Phenol Red was administered intravenously to patients to measure kidney function. Because healthy kidneys filter and excrete the dye rapidly into urine, doctors could calculate renal blood flow by measuring how much dye was eliminated over a set timeframe.
