Applications:
1. Catalysis: 
  • Mercury(II) sulfate acts as a catalyst in various reactions, particularly in the hydration of alkynes to form carbonyl compounds and the conversion of glycals to enals.
  • It’s also used in the oxymercuration-demercuration process, which involves the hydration of unsaturated compounds.
2. Analytical Chemistry:
  • It’s used in the determination of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) to remove interference from chloride ions in the reaction. 
  • It can be used as a reagent to detect fatty acids. 
3. Extraction of Metals: 
  • Mercury(II) sulfate can be used in the extraction of gold and silver from roasted pyrite.
4. Other Applications:
  • It can be used as a reagent in the preparation of other mercury compounds like calomel and corrosive sublimate. 
  • In the past, it was used in some medical treatments, but this is less common today due to its toxicity.

Mercury(II) sulfate, commonly called mercuric sulfate, is the chemical compound HgSO4. It is an odorless salt that forms white granules or crystalline powder. In water, it separates into an insoluble basic sulfate with a yellow color and sulfuric acid. It is a hazardous substance and should be handled with care. Mercury sulfate can be produced by treating mercury with hot concentrated sulfuric acid:
Hg + 2 H2SO4 → HgSO4 + SO2 + 2 H2O
Alternatively yellow mercuric oxide reacts also with concentrated sulfuric acid.
Mercury(II) sulfate (HgSO4) has several applications, primarily as a catalyst and reagent in chemical reactions, as well as in analytical chemistry and extraction of metals. Specifically, it is used in catalytic reactions, COD analysis, and the extraction of precious metals like gold and silver.
