Luff Schoorl’s reagent, also known as LS Reagent, is a chemical solution used for detecting and quantifying reducing sugars. It is a copper sulfate solution that reacts with reducing sugars, forming a brick-red precipitate of cuprous oxide (Cu2O). It is used in qualitative and quantitative  determination of reducing sugars in samples, such as glucose and other carbohydrates. When Luff Schoorl’s reagent reacts with reducing sugars, the copper ions (Cu2+) in the solution are reduced to cuprous ions (Cu+), forming a reddish-brown precipitate. 
Safety Considerations:
  • Luff Schoorl’s solution can be harmful if it comes into contact with skin or eyes, so safety glasses and gloves are recommended.
  • In case of skin irritation or eye contact, it is important to rinse with water or a suitable medium.
  • It is also important to store and handle the solution safely, as it can be damaged by prolonged exposure to light or heat.
