Phase-Transfer Catalysis (PTC): This is its most frequent use. Because of its bulky organic groups, the TBAH cation can carry anions from an aqueous phase into an organic phase, allowing reactions to occur between reagents that would otherwise never meet.
Non-Aqueous Titration: It is the standard reagent for titrating weak acids in organic solvents. Unlike (NaOH), it is soluble in solvents like toluene or methanol and typically does not produce interfering precipitates.
Ion-Pair Chromatography: Used as a mobile phase additive to improve the resolution of acidic or ionic compounds.
Semiconductor Manufacturing: High-purity versions are used as a “developer” or cleaning agent for silicon wafers and photoresists.
Formula: (C4H9)4NOH (often abbreviated as Bu4NOH or TBAOH).
Structure: It consists of a central nitrogen atom bonded to four butyl groups, creating a bulky quaternary ammonium cation paired with a hydroxide anion.
Basicity: It is a very strong base, comparable in strength to inorganic hydroxides like Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH), but with the added advantage of being soluble in organic solvents.
