Sodium hydroxide at this concentration is used extensively across various industries:
Cleaning and Degreasing: It is the active ingredient in many industrial-strength oven cleaners and drain openers because it dissolves organic tissue (hair) and grease.
Water Treatment: It is used to adjust the pH of water and to help neutralize acidic water sources.
Paper Manufacturing: It helps dissolve lignin to separate fibers in the wood pulping process.
Food Preparation: In very controlled environments, it is used for chemical peeling of fruits and vegetables or for glazing pretzels to give them their characteristic brown, shiny crust.
pH Level: A 10% solution is strongly basic, typically having a pH of approximately 13 to 14.
Exothermic Reaction: When sodium hydroxide pellets are dissolved in water to create this solution, the process releases significant heat.
Saponification: It has the ability to break down fats and oils into soap, which is why it feels “slippery” or “soapy” if it touches the skin (though this is actually the chemical reacting with the oils on your skin).
