Temperature & Accuracy

Because conductivity is a measure of ion mobility, temperature is the most critical variable.

  1. The 25°C Benchmark: The 500 µS/cm rating is only accurate at exactly 25°C.

  2. Temperature Correction: Most solutions come with a Correction Table on the bottle. If your room temperature is 20°C, the actual reading should be approximately 450 µS/cm; if it is 30°C, it should be roughly 550 µS/cm.

  3. Automatic Temperature Compensation (ATC): If your meter has ATC, it will sense the temperature and automatically “math” the reading back to what it would be at 25°C.

Maintenance Tips

  • Cross-Contamination: This is a relatively low-value standard. Even a tiny drop of sweat or tap water can significantly change the 500 µS/cm value. Always rinse your probe with distilled water and blot it dry before inserting it into the calibration sample.

  • Single-Use Policy: Once you pour a sample of the standard into a small beaker for calibration, never pour it back into the main bottle. Discard it to ensure the bulk supply remains pure.

  • Carbon Dioxide Absorption: Over time, CO₂ from the air dissolves into the solution, forming weak carbonic acid which adds ions and slowly increases the conductivity. Keep the bottle tightly sealed when not in use.
